Understanding Invitation Text in English

 We often hear the word invitation (invitation), but what does invitation text actually mean?  According to the linguists who put it in their dictionaries, invitation is defined:

 According to Oxford Learner's Dictionary defines "invitation" as follows:

 a spoken or written request to somebody to do something or to go somewhere

 

 So "invitation" is a request either in the form of words or written to someone to do something or go somewhere.

 Simply explain what is an invitation?  However, to understand better, there is a more comprehensive definition of invitation.

 According to vocabulary.com, the invitations are:

 An invitation is a request, a solicitation, or an attempt to get another person to join you at a specific event.


 If we interpret it in Indonesian, invitation is a request, invitation, or effort for other people to be willing to join us at a certain event.

 Communicative Purpose Invitation Text in English

 Actually, from some of the definitions that have been conveyed above, the communicative purpose of the invitation text is very clear, which is to invite or invite someone to attend a certain event.  In general, each invitation will be marked with a purpose by including the following phrases:


 Would you like to come

 Would you like to join us

 I would like to invite you

 Request the present of ...


 Basically, it can be marked with a variety of phrases and sentences that have the meaning of inviting the basic vocabulary of "invite", "join", "come", "request", etc.

-    The Purpose/Tujuan Invitation (Undangan)

“To invite someone attend/come an event.”

Untuk mengajak atau mengundang seseorang untuk hadir dalam suatu acara tertentu

 -    Generic Structure Invitation in English

 The sentence, phrase, or paragraph arrangement of an invitation is usually called a generic structure or schematic structure.  In general, each invitation has its own uniqueness, but as a whole it can be underlined that the invitation text will be written with the following structure:

 1. Invitee: Who was invited

 2. Body of invitation: The contents of the invitation are usually in the form of the following:

     Occasion: What occasion is this invitation made for

     Day or Date: The day and date

     Time: The time specified

     Place: The place where the invitees are expected to attend

 3. Inviter: Who is inviting

 Once again, the structure as above is only a general rule of thumb for how an invitation is written in English.  And even so there will be many variations of the elements included in the invitation and it may differ from one another


 Example of a Simple Invitation Text in English

 Invitation text that we find on several occasions is usually divided into 2 types, namely a formal invitation and an informal invitation.

Formal invitation


Dialogue 1 ( with Nadifa Nur Amalia )


Iqna     : Nad, what will you do tomorrow morning?

Nadifa : Not much, what did you have in mind?

Iqna     : The Surabaya Fair is going on downtown. Would you like to go? 

Nadifa : Sure, sounds like fun. What is it anyway?

Iqna     : Just a bunch of vendors selling food and clothes. There are also some music performers. It's interesting just to walk around looking at the people and the sights.

Nadifa : What time and where should we meet?

Iqna     : The fair opens at 9 am. How about 10 am? Let me pick you up at your house.

Nadifa : Sounds great. See you then!

Iqna     : See you.


Dialogue 2 ( with Nadifa Nur Amalia )


Iqna     : Do you know that there will be a celebration of our school?

Nadifa : Yes I do. It will be next month. The alumni of our school, will be invited?

Iqna     : I have invited them by the announcement in the social media.

Nadifa : How about this response?

Iqna     : They are interested and will probably come
